Belgium Map and Geography of Belgium

The country is not all that big - in terms of physical size it is often compared to the state of Maryland in the US, and it's about one and a half times the size of Wales in the UK. Cities tend to be small but have almost uniformly retained their historical characters. Brussels is the centre of European politics and both the EU and Nato are headquartered here. The country is also a world player in trade despite its small size.

There are, however, really only two regions to Belgium that make sense in the realpolitik of day-to-day life: the French, or Walloon and the Flemish region (Flanders). This division occurs in a roughly straight line from Liège (east) to Tournai (west). Brussels is actually located in Flanders but remains an entity unto itself in the country with its cosmopolitan culture and society.
